Repeat prescriptions are normally for patients on long-term treatment, and are issued only with the doctor's prior agreement. Remember to make an appointment with the doctor to review your medication whenever you are asked to do so, and in plenty of time to obtain a further supply.

Other Ways to Order your Prescriptions

Chemist:

You can also ask for your prescription to be collected by a local chemist. Please check at reception which chemists offer this service. Unfortunately we cannot accept responsibility for prescriptions lost in the post or by the chemist.

Due to the possibility of errors, requests for repeat prescriptions will not be taken over the telephone.

Prescriptions will be ready for collection in 72 working hours if you will be picking the prescription up from the Surgery.

Please request repeat prescriptions well in advance of public holidays, etc.

For those that request their prescription be sent to a local pharmacy then the time will be dependant on that pharmacy. Please contact the relevant pharmacy for an indication of the timescale.

If you are on the same medication regularly and use the same pharmacy then under this scheme you can get you repeat prescriptions direct from your pharmacy, rather than getting them from your surgery each time.

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

• those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
• those who are age exempt
• those with certain medical conditions
• More information is available at NHS Choices

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

• Prescription (per item): £9.65
• 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
• 3-month PPC: £31.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.
